Northern Peninsula College Multi-strand Science class has studied a bush tucker unit, with a major component of the term working on the Alau Bush Walkabout.

As a class project students labelled 20 of the 38 bush tucker and bush medicine plants named in the Alau Bush Walkabout Booklet  produced by Alan Bragg.
With the assistance of Mr Titom Tamwoy, students identified the 20 plants and labelled them with temporary labels.  In class time students stencilled permanent labels (wooden tags) and then attached them to the appropriate plants for easy identification.
Students also produced a “ Welcome Sign” for the track. As part of their assessment, students chose a plant and presented information on their plant to class members via an oral presentation.
It was a really good experience for students as they were able to learn about bush tucker plants in the local area and they were able to assist with the preservation of a project initiated by the Umagico Aboriginal Council.
It is hoped that visitors to the NPA will use this track to learn about some of the plants used by aboriginal people.
