Events How To
RULES FOR INCLUSION:
This events calendar is offered as a free community service to our local readership. This calendar is solely for the listing of not-for-profit and local community events in the Torres Strait islands and Cape York NPA communities.
The sort of events that should be included on this calendar include: community fund-raising events (fetes, sausage-sizzles etc), community meetings, all irregular school activities where public attendence is being sought, and other non-for-profit events that are open to the wider community. People should not list an event if attendence is closed or restricted to the majority of the local population, as this is a public forum.
Events run by privately owned businesses, including for-profit pub-events, concerts and the like will not be permitted on this website unless the majority of proceeds of the event are going to charity or local community organisations. The only exception to this is if events have been advertised in the print version of the Torres News. In this case, advertisers will be permitted to register on the site and list their own events on this events calendar at no additional cost for the period of time that their advertising in the Torres News remains current. The preference is for advertisers to enter their own events onto the calendar but a surcharge of $25, including GST, will be applied per event if the client requires Torres News staff to list an event on this website on their behalf.
As there is a relatively low penetration of computers across the Torres Strait and Cape York NPA, and given that this is online calendar is a new initiative, people should not rely on this events calendar to ensure a high community turnout for a listed event. With around 2,500 copies of the Torres News sold locally each week (3,000 copies total circulation), and distribution to each inhabited island in the Torres Strait and the five communities of the Cape York NPA, the printed edition of this newspaper remains the best means for ensuring the community is aware of an event that is taking place. Advertising related enquiries can be made by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or by calling 1300 TORRES (1300 867 737).
The Torres News may, at some future date, establish an additional calendar for listing of non-local events specifically relating to Torres Strait Islanders and Cape York NPA Aborigines but we have prioritised this locally-focused events-calendar first.
To avoid the over-cluttering of this calendar, regularly scheduled events - including sporting fixtures, regularly-scheduled meetings and weekly Church services - should NOT be listed on this calendar, as this calendar is designed to promote irregular events, such as Church fetes, sporting codes' seasonal sign-ons, parent-teacher nights, sporting finals, school concerts, annual balls etc.
It is as the complete discretion of the Site Editor as to which entries fit within these proceeding guidelines and correspondence will not be entered into once a decision has been made by the Site Editor to exclude a proposed event.
HOW TO ENTER YOUR EVENT:
You must first register as a user of this website to be able to add an event to the calendar.
Once you have logged in as a user, a plus sign will appear on the calendar. Click on this and you will be able to put in the information relating to your event.
You are able to describe the start-time, location and duration of the event, as well as provide contact details so people can contact organisers.
Once you have submitted your entry, it will be sent to the Site Editor for approval before it will appear on the calendar. This process could take several days, even a week, before an event is approved to appear on the calendar as the priority for Torres News staff is the production and distribution of the printed edition of the Torres News. This calendar is being offered as a non-for-profit services for the community and only limited time can be allocated to its maintenance.
