Smith lined up for Kubin side Arkai Brothers which reached the semi-finals of the competition played at Ken Brown Memorial Oval on TI from October 9-11.
In 2008, Weipa based Smith won the trophy when playing with Cape York side Central Cape Suns and is widely regarded as the premier forward in the Torres Strait, Cape York and NPA.
2009 Grand finalists Regional Pacific Balas (Badu Island) and Wugga Boars (Moa) dominated the individual awards presented after the final.
Golden Boots went to champion young back Solomon Ahmat (Regional Pacific Balas), player of the grand finals to Cairns competition player Wayne Laza (Regional Pacific Balas), best back: Victor Akiba (Wugga Boars), best forward: Bali Satrick (Wugga Boars), Rookie of the Year: Josh Mene (Wugga Boars), fastest forward: Edward Ingui (Wugga Boars), men’s coach of the carnival Tony Bani (Wagadagam Storms), and highest try scorer: Maipele Morseu (Regional Pacific Balas).
Regional Pacific Balas won the final 54-10 and their inspirational captain George Nona said he found it difficult to pick just five best players.
“I think all the rest of the players in the Balas team played well but the five that I would pick are Solomon Ahmat, Joe Tamwoy, Walter Nona, Noel Underwood and Maipele Morseu. For the Wugga team would be Victor Akiba, Keith Pabai (Jnr), Edward Inguai, Trevor Cook and Kailu George,” Nona said.
The ladies competition was a best of three with Baria Beizam winning the final game 12-8 in golden point time after both teams had won a game apiece.
Best for Beizam were Sarah Sailor, Latoya Moses and Yakopeta Akiba whilst for Sirens Elsie Seriat, Kristy Wilson, Josephine Sagigi and Annette Fell shone.
The ladies player of the carnival was crafty back Kirsty Wilson (Sirens) and the golden boots went to Latoya Moses (Beizam). Highest try scorer was Sarah Sailor (Beizam), rookie of the year: Yakopeta Akiba, player of the finals: Sarah Sailor (Beizam), best back: Latoya Moses (Beizam), best forward: Elsie Seriat (Sirens), fastest forward: Elsie Seriat (Sirens), and sports women of the carnival: Elsie Seriat (Sirens). Women’s coach of the carnival was Marita Dorante (Sirens).
Another highlight was the fastest man and women sprints up the Ken Brown Memorial Oval. John Bosen representing Arkai Brothers took out the men’s race and speedster Sharquille Uiduldam (Wugga Boars) the ladies.
