The Queensland Department of Housing will undertake research to identify and analyse issues relating to current and projected housing demand and supply on Thursday Island, Housing Minister Robert Schwarten says.

Mr Schwarten said the research would also examine land availability and town planning arrangements, and other issues impeding successful housing outcomes.

“It is my hope that the outcome of this research will, amongst other things, identify and explore opportunities to increase the supply of housing on Thursday Island through private sector investment. The State Government is doing its bit. The Department of Housing has around 270 dwellings on Thursday Island and a further 48 on Horn Island (breakdown attached).

“As at January 31, 2007 there were 34 applications for social housing on Thursday Island and a further 10 on Horn Island.

“With that in mind, the department will spend more than $7.5 million building more housing on Thursday Island.”

Mr Schwarten said construction of eight, two-bedroom apartments was forecast for completion by June while construction of a four-bedroom detached house was forecast to start this month and construction of four, two-bedroom duplex dwellings was forecast to start in May.
