"It’s vital that I regularly get out to these remote areas to meet as many local people as possible," Ms Nelson-Carr said.
Among the issues raised by community and council representatives during meetings with the Minister were concerns about future education and employment opportunities for children and young people; the impact of global warming on island erosion; and the matter of stolen wages.
On the NPA, a large crowd also gathered to watch the Minister officially open the New Mapoon Children’s Activity Centre.
The occasion included a dance performance by local women, an official plaque unveiling and a formal blessing.
A highlight of the trip was also in New Mapoon where the Minister presented Mrs Josephine Lifu and Ms Margaret Mark with Certificates of Recognition for their longstanding contribution to the care of children in the community.
"It is my pleasure to present these certificates to these outstanding women who have been working in Nai-Beguta Agama Aboriginal Corporation since its inception," Ms Nelson-Carr said.
"They have been working throughout the last 16 years and continue to work to maintain and achieve better outcomes for children in the community. The dedication and long service of these two ladies is an outstanding achievement.
"My heartfelt congratulations goes to Josephine and Margaret. Your commitment and passion to serve the community deserves to be acknowledged," the Minister said.
